The Self Packaging Knife

This project was created during an eight-week course. The aim was to create a cutting object by taking inspiration from an every day (non-cutting) object.

Starting with a pair of disposable chopsticks, I went through several stages that allowed me to change and adapt my concept.

The final object is a knife with a handle that extends over the blade to create a guard and a kind of packaging for the knife. The extension of the handle protects any hands from the blade and, as long as the 'breaking point' is intact, ensures the knife was never used. The extension of the handle over the blade and the creation of a "breaking point" allows three things to happen:
1. Safe and simple packaging.
2. A moment when the knife reveals itself to the user.
3. "Breaking" the knife makes you its owner and allows you to use it.
